Before I can bring Soothers from the Mistborn series into D20, I need to create a new spell like effect to cover their ability to push down on all of a person’s emotions. We saw the Lord Ruler doing it all the time, and we saw Vin use it with devastating effect when combined with Duralumin.
Usually, a soother pushes down select emotions, either to suppress those emotions or to allow other emotions to become dominant. There’s plenty of spell and spell like effects to cover most of those single emotion situations. But there’s nothing for the full soothe effect.
To create the ability, I first needed to create three new conditions: Discouraged, Apathetic, and Despondent. They’re like the three stages of fear, as far as stats go.
- Discouraged: A discouraged character takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.
- Apathetic: An apathetic character no longer cares about the outcome of any challenges (i.e. combat) he was facing. He will seek to leave, but not in a way that will endanger him. If attacked, he will still defend himself. An apathetic character takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. He can use any special abilities, including spells, to leave, unless doing so puts him in danger. (An apathetic character would not be reckless enough to cast teleport while in melee, but might just take a 5′ step and then cast it so as not to provoke an attack.)
- Despondent: A despondent character must drop anything she holds and cower. She can’t take any other actions. In addition, she is at -2 on armor class, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks, as well as losing her dexterity bonus to AC, if any.
And with the three new conditions, now I can define the spell.
Soothe
Allomancy [Mind-affecting]
| Casting Time: | 1 standard action |
| Range: | 30ft + 10ft/level |
| Targets: | 1 creature/level |
| Duration: | Continuous while focusing |
| Save DC: | 10 + level + charisma bonus |
| Saving Throw: | Will partial (See text) |
| Spell Resistance: | No |
The soother pushes down on the target’s emotions, squashing their desire to act, resulting in sentiments like “I just don’t feel like it, anymore.” or “My heart’s just not in it.” The target takes negatives to many rolls, and may even disengage from combat.
The soother must focus on soothing continuously (as each round’s standard action) in order for the affect to continue. Targeted creatures get a new saving throw each round. If the soother is damaged while soothing and fails a concentration check, then the effect drops and all targets shake off any lasting affects at the end of the round.
The normal affect from a successful soothing would be to make the target Apathetic (see conditions). On a save, the target would instead become Discouraged. If the soother flares their metals, then the target would instead become Despondent, with a successful save resulting in Discouraged.
